Our roof, ourselves

Social housing in Thessaloniki - guided tour

The guided tour "Our roof, ourselves" is an interactive discussion about the past, present and future of social housing in Greece. The aim of this tour is both to highlight the past discontinuities and the specific characteristics of efforts to develop social housing in Greece, and to present the new and promising initiative of the municipality of Thessaloniki for the provision of social and affordable housing.

Initially, the former Neighbourhood Room in the 12-storey blocks of flats will serve as a meeting point, where breakfast coffee will be served. At the same time, student ideas and proposals for intervention in the wider area, which were designed within the Urban Design Workshop of the Department of Architecture and Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, will be presented. At the first stop of the tour, Athina Vitopoulou will highlight the spatial and environmental qualities in the post-war social housing complexes. At the next stop, Dimitra Siatitsa, using the settlement of Pili Axiou as a starting point, will tell us a few words about the history of social housing in Greece. Finally, Anestis Telidis and Meriç Özgüneş will present the establishment and the next steps of the Social and Affordable Housing Provider.

In conclusion, the tour "Our roof, ourselves" is a journey to the present that starts from the past and highlights the future of social housing in Thessaloniki. Because access to affordable housing is a key element in shaping cities, their social cohesion and, above all, a fundamental right.
