Looking into the cooperative residence in Greece

What are the cooperative residences? What is collective ownership? How do these ideas address our current housing problems? How can we initiate such a project in Greece? What are the challenges and what resources are available? What are the examples from other countries that could inspire us?

These are some of the questions that this collection of information material, guides, and inquiries about housing cooperation in Greece aim to answer. It gathers the experience gained over the last six years by The CoHab Athens group through research, workshops, open discussions, working groups, and visits to housing cooperation initiatives in other countries.

This research is an ongoing process, and many issues related to the implementation of the first housing cooperation initiative in Greece remain open. Unfortunately, there are no clear answers yet, as Greece lacks both prior experience and adequate institutional mechanisms to establish, finance, and put into practice such democratic, non-profit and cooperative forms of housing. The experience of other countries, that have implemented similar initiatives in unshaped and unexplored contexts, indicates that there is no single route or strategy, as they are the outcome of a collective process that uses the energy of people who believe they can achieve things in common.
