The Heinrich Böll Foundation fosters new ideas and supports initiatives that promote justice in practice, mostly through participatory processes, particularly focusing on issues such as sustainable development, democracy, human rights and gender equality.
This is the office of the German green political foundation in Greece, based in Thessaloniki since 2012. We produce research and publications, organize public events and we love creating open and safe spaces for dialogue. Collaboration with institutions and civil society organizations, as well as their networking, lies at the heart of our mission.
Driven by green political thought, our work starts at the local level, listening to citizens and bringing to light important issues that often remain overlooked, while creating the conditions for testing alternative solutions and policy proposals.
The fields in which it is active are the following:
Ecology
We stand for a democratic energy transition, the enhancement of climate resilience, the reduction of plastic pollution, circular economy, sustainable mobility for all and agro-ecology, with the ultimate aim of promoting environmental justice and mitigating the climate crisis.
Democracy
By promoting dialogue, cooperation and participation, we seek to strengthen the involvement of citizens in democratic procedures, while supporting evidence-based advocacy actions by civil society stakeholders with a view to achieving systemic change.
Social Solidarity Economy (SSE)
We aim at empowering initiatives and especially networks of the broader SSE ecosystem, while at the same time we seek to foster the co-creation of new and transformative narratives around the issues i.a. of work, care, technology and space.
Migration
Through our regional programme encompassing Turkey, Greece and the Western Balkans, we try to advocate for human rights-based migration policies and strengthen the resilience of all relevant stakeholders through networking and cross-border synergies, as well as by amplifying their voice at EU level.
Foreign and Security Policy
We seek to develop alternatives to the dominant approach of realism in international practice, focusing on feminist and green foreign policy through data collection and analysis, guided by diplomatic practice, critical theory and international relations theory.
