In 2023, Greece was hit by a series of devastating natural disasters. Wildfires and floods claimed many lives and left behind destroyed homes, devastated landscapes and entire communities plunged into loss and uncertainty.

Photographer Ilir Tsouko and writer Anja Troelenberg travelled to the affected areas a few months after the disasters and encountered a profound paradox: in the darkest moments a ray of light often illuminates who we truly are. Disasters nοt only destroy, they also reveal - forcing us to confront the reality of our society: how we fall apart or come together when faced with the unthinkable.

The multimedia project “Beyond Destruction – Rhodes, Thessaly, Evros” (videos, photographs, interviews-texts) tells a story of survival, the meaning of community, and the indomitable human spirit.

Greece is far behind in terms of waste management. Dozens of landfills all over the country, EU fines, failure to meet the European target for reuse/recycling at 50% - all these create a situation in which we all need to react.

This video is a production of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Thessaloniki, Greece. It was created as part of the publication Plastic Atlas, produced by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung and Break Free From Plastic. The adaptation of the Atlas for Greece was carried out by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Thessaloniki office, in cooperation with the Ecological Recycling Society, Greenpeace Greece and WWF Greece.

Plastics entering our body can cause a hormonal chaos, because they act as "endocrine disruptors", which mimic hormones and take their place! The risk for women through feminine hygiene products is high.
