On 11–14 September 2025, at Lake Plastiras, the “Academy of Alternatives” took place — a series of workshops, discussions, and presentations aimed at strengthening and coordinating Social Solidarity Economy initiatives, as well as highlighting the Karditsa region through the connection of local actors. The event strongly underscored the need for new political narratives and strategies at the local level. Karditsa: The Social Solidarity Economy, the organizations, the people

FEATURE STORY
Journalist Giorgos Tsantikos visited the Karditsa region seeking to understand not simply whether cooperative initiatives exist, but whether they form an organized ecosystem—that is, a network of Social Solidarity Economy actors who coordinate and interact with one another with the aim of creating social value. For this research, he spoke with the heads of four local organizations that provide support to cooperative initiatives in the area.

Academy of Alternatives: A four-day reflection and strategic planning event for the Social Solidarity Economy

REPORT
A strong need for new political narratives and strategies at the local level emerged through the “Academy of Alternatives” — an initiative of the Heinrich Böll Foundation held on 11–14 September 2025 at Lake Plastira, under the auspices of the local municipality. This intensive four‑day programme of participatory workshops, discussions, and presentations brought together people from the field of Social Solidarity Economy as well as local stakeholders, who had the opportunity to network and jointly explore challenges and future prospects.
