Sustainable Cultural Management summer course

Χρόνος ανάγνωσης: 3 λεπτά

International intensive summer course, 6 - 10/6/2016, Thessaloniki

There has been considerable interest and growing engagement around the importance of tackling climate change and promoting environmental sustainability in the cultural and creative industries. This has ranged from high-profile champions in fields such as film and music, attempts by leading businesses and cultural institutions to reduce their carbon footprint, environmental policies developed by funding and strategic bodies, and a plethora of artistic work engaging the public directly. These activities are generating demand for a “green” creative economy, and a supply chain is emerging that is helping to create the conditions for real systemic change.

With this in mind mitos21, the network representing some of the most influential national theatres and theatre institutions in Europe initiated the first International Intensive Summer Course on Sustainable Cultural Management that will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece from 6 to 10 June 2016. The course is organised in collaboration with Julie's Bicycle, the UK based, leading global charity, bridging the gap between environmental sustainability and the creative industries and the School of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It is also realised with the support of Heinrich Boell Stiftung Greece, Onassis Cultural Centre, Goethe Institut Thessaloniki, Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts - USA, Laznia Nowa Theatre - Krakow, Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

This intensive course is designed to share the environmental best practice identified by and for the performing arts and to explore what actions can be taken to become more ecological in the way we govern cultural organisations, manage buildings, create and tour productions, collaborate with partners, and engage with audiences. Experts from across Europe and the world will share their experience and best practice, and participants will come away with new skills and perspectives to manage their work effectively in the context of environmental sustainability and climate change.

The course aims to bring together a mixed group of cultural professionals from across Europe and the world, from all levels of experience and environmental know-how, to encourage peer-to-peer learning and exchange. The focus is on the performing arts. We will consider applications from the following performing arts professionals:

  • performing arts professionals – administrators, managers and artists – working in cultural institutions at all stages of their career
  • academics/lecturers teaching at arts administration and cultural management courses
  • post-graduate students of arts administration and cultural management (working experience, including unpaid work/creative practice, will be appreciated)
