The European Union needs to decarbonise its energy system at an unprecedented pace in order to build a future-proof, low-carbon economy. Coal regions not only hold major political powers but are also crucial economic assets for Member States. The "Phasing-out Coal -Reinventing European Regions" report, by the Greens, provides key information on the role of coal-mining in the socio-economic structure of four European regions and how existing European structural instruments could be utilised for a just energy transition.
The event is postponed, as it is estimated that the bill on PPC will be voted on the same day in the Parliament, and therefore all the relevant bodies in which the presentation would have taken place will be in Athens.
The "Phasing-out Coal, Reinventing European Regions" report was issued by the European Parliament's Greens-European Free Alliance political group and supervised by MEPs Ska Keller and Bas Eickhout. It outlines specific transformation challenges in key European coal and lignite mining regions, namely of Western Macedonia in Greece, Aragon in Spain, Lusatia in Germany and Silesia in Poland.
The report will be presented in Kozani, at an event organised by the Municipality of Kozani, in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Greece Foundation, on April 25, 12:00-14:30, at the "Coventareo" Hall (7 Charisiou Mukas). MEP Ska Keller and the co-author Timon Wehnert, Wuppertal Institut, will present the key-findings and short interventions will follow by representatives of institutions of the region.
Simultaneous Greek-English interpretation will be provided.
