Build a bee oasis

We protect biodiversity in the urban environment - hands-on workshop

We have a bee to thank for every one in three bites we eat. Let’s give back to these busy creatures, learn all about their hard work and create a bee oasis downtown! By planting bee friendly flowers (full of nectar and pollen), we create urban oases, suitable for hosting bees. Through a hands-on workshop designed by The Bee Camp team (for all ages and genders), we aim to raise awareness about the importance of the bees on ecosystems and biodiversity, the challenges that they face right before we take action through planting! Through making a bee oasis in the Pocket Park created by the Alexandrou Svolou Neighborhood Initiative sends a message that we can collectively reclaim public space and create spots where all people, families and species are welcome!

The Bee Camp

The Bee Camp is the first non-profit organization in Greece that aims on the protection of bees and urban pollinators. Our vision is to make cities a better place for both people and biodiversity! The Bee Camp core team consists of 6 young women: artists, educators and environmental scientists, anthropologists who are determined to make cities greener, more participatory and more bee-friendly! Through workshops, educational activities and raising-awareness events, conservation and greening actions they aim to inspire respect for nature in light of a more optimistic future. At the same time, they are creating a green network of available habitats (Bee Spots) in the city for its smallest residents: the pollinators. The Bee Camp directly contributes to the achievement of the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 15 Life on Land, SDG 17 Partnerships for the goals.

Alexandrou Svolou Neighborhood Initiative

The Alexandrou Svolou Neighborhood Initiative has been active since 2013, carrying out various cultural and participatory actions in the public space. It consists of a diverse mix of people and operates with horizontal organizational structures. On a daily level it seeks ways in which the Neighbourhood can become more vibrant and creative. In doing so, it combines the collective knowledge of the community and harnesses the skills of the local creative capital of the Neighbourhood. By following concrete and methodological steps, it attempts to contribute to the cultivation of the Neighbourhood’s identity and the consolidation of a more participatory culture. This framework focuses on enhancing the quality of life that, through participation, self-organisation and cultural expression, aims to connect residents with the Neighbourhood and the so-called urban commons.
