Lesvos towards a sustainable tourism strategy

Tourism is a key economy of the northern Aegean islands. As tourism economy is a sector divided into smaller sections it offers multifarious options to strengthen existing business as well as to start new business without high investments or long lasting preparation. Often it is more a question of qualification as well as cooperation among local / regional partners. By the project the potential for new or improved sustainable tourism activities were identified as well as a proposal for implementation was developed. By a public workshop addressed to local and regional stakeholders from tourism but also linked sectors (e.g. agriculture) the results were disseminated and a starting point for implementation was created. By the cooperation among the University of the Aegean and the Munich University of Applied Sciences young people as well as researches and academic teachers set up a nucleus for a tourism expert network as well as a longer lasting cooperation among institutions. Furthermore, the idea of entrepreneurship and cooperation in tourism was strengthened. The perspective was taken from the side of the consumer and by the market. Therefore analysis covered not only the supply and demand but also the structures of the destination organization. It showed options to improve administrative structures, to set up public private partnerships as well as to strengthen entrepreneurship and cooperation potential in the tourism sector.
