Book presentation: Combating antisemitism in Greece

Wednesday 03.05.2017, 19:00, E.S.H.E.M.-th. (Stratigou Kallari, 5, 3rd Floor Thessaloniki)

Anti-Semitism in Europe of the 21st century, about a century “after Auschwitz”, is not only present but on the rise, as recent studies indicate. It is perhaps not as manifest nor as openly asserting itself anymore with pseudoscientific, racist, anti-Semitic attitudes and prejudice: It is expressed however, either as an emotion or as a cover, as a stereotype or as distrust, or even with violence.

Greece holds one of the highest percentages of anti-Semitism in Europe, recorded by international and Greek studies alike. One the few pertinent public opinion polls in the last few years in Greece is published in the study: Anti-Semitism in Greece today: Expressions, causes and tackling of the phenomenon. The researchers will present the outcome of the study as well as suggestions for effectively tackling the phenomenon, both by the State as well as other institutions.

The event will host opening remarks from the European Commission’s Coordinator on combating anti-Semitism in Europe, Katharina von Schnurbein.
